Acceptance criteria for self funded infertility treatment
Consideration of the Welfare of the Child
Our major consideration when patients wish to be treated is the welfare of any child born as a result of fertility treatment. The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act (1990) states that the welfare of any children born as a result of fertility treatment should be taken into consideration before offering support.
The Centre sends a form to the patients GP in order that he/she can comment on the intended parent(s) suitability for assisted conception with regard to the welfare of any child born as a result of treatment.
Patient Selection Criteria
The intended parent(s) are assessed as thoroughly as possible. We particularly aim to ensure the following:
- The commitment of intended parent(s) to bringing up a child.
- The intended parent(s) ages, medical history and the medical history of (both) their families are taken into consideration.
- The ability of the intended parent(s) to meet the needs of the child/children.
- Any possible risk of harm to the child/children, including inherited disorders, abuse/neglect, any existing children in care, a history of violence, drug abuse, sexual abuse or relevant criminal convictions in either the patient or their partner.
- The affect any new child will have on any existing children.
If seeking treatment as a couple, only couples who have been in a stable relationship for at least two years will be considered for treatment.
Self funded treatment acceptance criteria
- The welfare of the child has been considered.
- The woman seeking treatment is usually under 45 years of age. Special consideration may be given to treat women up to 50.
- A male intended parent is under 60 years of age
- If seeking treatment as a couple, only couples that have been co-habiting in a stable relationship for at least 2 years or are in a stable marriage will be considered for treatment.
- The intended parent(s) agree to their GP(s) being informed by the unit about their treatment.
Information about NHS criteria is available on the NHS Patient Acceptance Criteria page.
Additional criteria for all patients
In addition to the above criteria there are several other issues that must be taken into account before a patient can be treated;
- The Centre reserves the right to deny treatment to any individual who acts in an aggressive or abusive manner towards staff or who does not comply with the treatment plan they are prescribed
- The Centre will not treat self funded patients who do not pay for their treatment in advance (refunds are given if treatments/ procedures are not carried out).
