Sexual problems
Sexual problems are common; however, couples are often embarrassed to mention and discuss them as reasons for infertility. Couples sometimes look to other reasons why they are struggling to conceive and only mention sexual problems as a last resort. Problems can range from impotence (failure to obtain an erection) to painful intercourse or lack of libido (sex drive).
Counselling or other treatments may significantly reduce these problems. All fertility consultations and associated issues that are discussed are treated in the strictest of confidence. Couples with any sexual, psychological or emotional difficulties are encouraged to discuss them with the trained staff at the centre.
Impotency
This is a very stressful and personal problem which can have a number of different causes including:
- Psychological/stress
- Medical conditions such as diabetes
- Spinal injuries
- Certain drugs e.g. some treatments for high blood pressure and gastric reflux/ulcers
It is very important that you inform the staff of any medication which you are or have been taking recently.
Impotence often requires specialist counselling. We have a consultant at the hospital who is an expert in these conditions and patients can be referred with their permission. Alternatively patients may wish to discuss this issue with our specialist fertility counsellors.
